INTERVIEW PREPARATION

ADVICE THAT WILL IMPROVE YOUR PERFORMANCE AT INTERVIEW

No one is born with great interview skills. Highly effective interviewees develop their skills through practice and preparation. One of the keys to success is to know what things to prepare before the interview. Failure to know what to focus on before the interview often leads to people preparing the wrong things. This can actually harm your performance. Arriving on time and appropriately dressed is also very important. The following checklist has been designed to put you on the right track - good luck!

BEFORE THE INTERVIEW

Be sure to phone the interviewer before the interview to confirm the exact time and location of the interview.

However, if the interviews are introduced through headhunting companies, this is not necessarily needed.

PERSONAL APPEARANCE

Ensure that you are appropriately dressed and have taken care for your personal appearance. The Interviewer has a short time to make their impression so your appearance is very important.

INTERVIEW MANNERS

Arrive on time –being late will give the Interviewer a bad impression of you before you even start! If running late, call the Interviewer to apologize as soon as possible.

Make a good first impression by shaking hands and making eye contact.

Before going into the interview, turn off your mobile phone. Many multinational companies will automatically reject candidates whose phone rings during an interview. Not turning your phone off is seen as the height of bad manners.

INTERVIEW PREPARATION

Prepare your answers and prepare those answers in the language in which you will have to speak. The key to interview preparation is knowing that a potential employer will want to know the following key things about you;

·         Do you have the skills, knowledge and experience to do the job? (Provide examples!)

·         Are you the sort of person they can work with?

·         What sort of person are you when at work?

·         What are your motivation levels?

·         What are your motivators and de-motivators?

Preparing answers to these questions in advance means that you will be able to answer virtually any question put to you! Preparing them in the language of the interview will also mean that nothing gets lost in translation!

Understand the role

Make sure you have a clear understanding of the role for which you are being interviewed. Call your Recruitment Consultant if you have any questions.

Research the company

Demonstrating at an interview that you’ve done a little research will always impress the interviewer. The rule of thumb is: the higher the position you’re going for the more you should know about the company and the industry.

Rehearse your answers before the interview – Give examples

It is one thing to know what to say quite another to say it fluently. Remember: how you say things at an interview is just as important as what you say.

Prepare specific examples of what you’ve achieved and how you’ve achieved it. Give examples that quantify your achievements. Avoid talking about the achievements and successes of your team or department and talk specifically about your own contributions!

Be positive

Avoid saying anything that does not put you in a positive light. When asked what your weaknesses are avoid saying you "work too hard" - it’s too common. A good strategy is to mention a skill that is not very relevant to the job you’re going for, and then tell the interviewer what you’re doing to overcome it.

Summarize

It’s very handy to have a short summary statement highlighting your strengths. You can use this at the end of an interview as a final flourish - good endings at interviews are extremely important.
